Gifu University's 65th Annual Festival

On the 2nd and 3rd of November, we had our annual fair. The Malaysian students here opened up a stall where we sold mee goreng, satay, kebab and roti canai. It was a huge success thanks to everyone chipping in and so much fun!

We only had the booth for a day, though, because we weren't lucky enough during the lottery draw.

By around 3pm we had already started packing up and were probably one of the first booths to do so. Yay!

Here are some photos from the event, including my scary face next to a moster-like thing. Till next year!

Review : Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (Oil Free)

Front and back view
I was looking for something that would extend the life of my id bareMinerals foundation during hotter days, so I decided to give this a try. My skin is oily/combo so the oil-free aspect of this primer really drew me in. I like the consistency. It doesn't feel thick and heavy. The smell is not exactly pleasant but bearable, I guess.

I wear this in the same manner I would wear a moisturiser. A little goes a long way with this. If you apply too much, it would just end up making your face oilier.
It totally feels like moisturiser so if you're the super oily type you can skip your moisturiser completely when using this
After applying this, I give it about 30 seconds to set and then I start applying my mineral powder foundation. I do notice that the foundation does last longer on my skin but it hasn't helped with the oiliness on my T-zone. I still need to blot at least once during the day but I don't need to touch up with extra powder.

I would recommend this for those of you with only slightly skin but not if you are oily/combo like me.

Summer Holidays Yay!

Holidays = Legit reason to take as many photos as humanly possible

My finals are over and so is the first half of the third year of my Engineering degree. My family are coming over and will be spending Raya with me in Osaka. I'm going to take them on a 10 day long adventure of Japan.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Summer.

Review : Revlon ColorStay (Oily/Combination Skin)

I've heard a lot about the Revlon Colourstay from Youtube gurus that I follow. For example :

So I wanted to try this out but Japan only carries 6 shades while in the US they get like 20 shades. Unfortunately I bought a shade that was way too dark for me on the first try, which was the 07 Toast. The lighter shade next to it seemed too pale for my skin which is why I grabbed the 07 instead. Then I had to go out and buy a second bottle, this time getting the 06 Medium Beige. As I expected, 06 was too light.

It made my skin tone look off. I know that Malay girls sometimes like to buy foundations in a lighter shade to give the effect of having whiter/brighter skin but if you go too far off the scale it just looks hella weird. More so when your neck or arms don't match up to the colour of your face.

What I ended up doing was mixing the 2 shades to get something that would match my skin perfectly. This was really tricky because 07 really is a strong brown shade so if I mixed in too much I'd look like I'd just come back from the beach or something. I would say that I mix in 3 parts 06 and 1 part 07. I'd mix in more of the 06 during Winter because I get a bit paler then.
Such a big gap in the colour range. Drives me mad
I should also point out that the Revlon Colorstay comes in 2 types; normal/dry skin and oily/combination. I think this is great because these skin types make such a difference to the type of finish that you'll get.
06(top) and 07(bottom). The colour when I combine the two
As you can  see in the photo above, the consistency is pretty thick and it's not watery or runny.

Even though this foundation is catered for oily/combination skin types, it didn't keep my face matt through out the day. What it did do was stay put from morning till night, so +1 point there. Setting powder is important unless you like the dewy look.

Also, this foundation sets pretty quick so you might want to pick up your speed while blending this on to your skin. I use a M.A.C 190 brush. The brush is dense and the short bristles give me a better control of how I want the foundation to glide on. The brush doesn't leave any streaky lines after application.

I also love the fact that this foundation came with a pump, a really good pump I might add.
The awesome pump(left) & the M.A.C. 190 brush
I would say that since this is a full coverage foundation it is thick and quite heavy so if you know that you prefer foundations that feel lighter then I wouldn't recommend this for you.

Blush and bronzer looks so beautiful on top of this. It really enhances the colours, so use blush/bronzer with a light hand.

Review : Concealers (M.A.C. & Bobbi Brown & Maybelline)

See how MAC really blends in with my skin tone. Lurveee it.

1. M.A.C. Mineralize Concealer in Shade NW30
My favourite of the three in this list. It is medium to full coverage. Blends easily. Creases a tiny bit even with setting powder(I use a translucent setting powder for this) but it lasts all day on my oily-combination skin. I usually whip this out when I feel that my under eye is a bit darker than usual. I place 4-5 dots on the under eye area then blend it out with a M.A.C 219 brush; here. It is not a concealer brush but I just like using it. This is great for getting the product really close to the lash line.

Note : I know that Asians are usually NC in M.A.C but when I tried out NC30 on one side and NW30 on the other, NW30 looked a lot more natural on me. So, I suggest getting the makeup people at M.A.C to test out a few shades on you before you proceed with your purchase.

Price : ¥2940 (RM96)

2. Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Warm Beige
I mistakenly got this in a shade too light for me so I usually use a setting powder in my actual shade to balance things out or else my under eye would look a bit weird. This creases on me too, about the same degree as the M.A.C one. I like the texture. It is moisturising so I would definitely recommend this for anyone who has dry to normal skin. I take the product using my ring finger and pat it on and around the under eye area then maybe use my 219 brush to soften any awkward edges.

Price : ¥3675 (RM120)

3. Maybelline Mineral Pure Concealer in Natural (Shade 02)
This is light to medium coverage. It did not cover my dark circles very well. Creasing is not that big of a problem but it does not last on my skin. After about half a day I can see it has started to fade off a bit. Maybe this would be better to cover slight blemishes on the skin instead of my panda eyes. My least favourite of the three. I dot the product onto my skin then just tap it until it blends in.

Price : ¥945 (RM31)

Review : Garnier Light Brightening Eye Roll-On

I've been using this for almost 2 months now. I use it every morning before I apply my essence water and every night before I apply my moisturiser. I have quite visible dark circles maybe due to my weird sleeping habits, dehydration or maybe it's just genetics. Now, let's get down to the review.

What it looks like

The claim : "Garnier Light EyeRoll-on is a massaging roll-on that combines caffeine and the draining effect of a massage to reduce puffiness and dark circles and brighten the eye contour." from the website here

My verdict : I did notice a reduction in puffiness even after a night of binge eating really salty snacks. The metal ball feels nice when it's gliding on your skin; a calming and cooling sensation. However, there was no visible reduction of dark circles and I'm sure my eye contour hasn't brightened up. So, if you want something to help with puffiness or protruding eye bags you could give this product a try but that's about it.

Price : RM24.90
Available at most drugstores and hypermarkets.

ps/ This is my personal experience. Results will of course vary for different people.

Neko Manma, Cat Cafe in Nagoya

Last Sunday, on our way back from the camping trip in Shizuoka, we stopped at a cat cafe in Nagoya. We actually failed to locate this place at first and only managed to get here after two tries.

Cat cafes are very much a legit thing in Japan. You can find them much easier in larger cities such as Tokyo and Osaka to name a few, but that doesn't mean that they're not available in smaller towns too.

The one we went to was called Neko Manma(ねこまんま). Here is the link to their site; Neko Manma.

The cafe's sign board
It costs ¥750 for 30 minutes and includes an all-you-can-drink bar. You can stay in there longer if you wish at a rate of ¥100 for every extra 5 minutes. If you're not wearing socks, a ¥100 fee will be charged to equip you with slippers.

The owner explaining the rules to us. You can see the cats they own on the wall.

The white one is so FLUFFY!

This was in the Female Cats Room, the Male Cats Room is next door

One of the male cats. He is huge! Like the size of a human 2 year old

You can see how big the cats are by comparing them with the humans next to them LOL

Cats galore!

Excuse the crappy pictures. I couldn't be bothered to dig around for my camera so all this was taken with my lowly iPhone 4S.

Newest Addition To My "To Buy" List : Maxi/Long Skirts

I've already bought a few of the cotton dresses that I talked about before; here. Now the next item that has caught my eye are colourful maxi/long skirts. They just seem so appropriate for Summer, all bright and happy like that.

I searched at Rakuten for any pieces that might fit the bill and I came across a few that really made me want to press the "Place In Cart" button. I'll survey for a little longer then make my mind up on which skirt I want the most.

Here are some samples of what I've found.

1. This one is only ¥1500(RM45) and look at all those beautiful colours. Weeeeee~~~

2. If those colours are bit too bright for your liking, I also found these. They're only ¥1000(RM35). They're a bit more soft colour-wise compared to the ones on the top, right? The cut is also a little looser.

3. The orange skirt really caught my attention. These are also ¥1500(RM45), I think. So pretty!

Hmm...so many to choose from and I'm still not done surveying the rest. Hehehe (>.<)

Loving You

Are you the kind of person that enjoys going out shopping or dining by yourself or with a group of people? How do you feel walking by yourself down a row of shops or at a park? Does it bother you to see a group of people hanging out when you're alone?

I would say that I'm a bit of both. I enjoy the company of others but I have no qualms with being by myself. Sometimes, I'd actually prefer the latter. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm the eldest of my siblings so I'm used to not asking or expecting help from others unless I deem it to be absolutely necessary. Then again, it might also have something to do with me being a fairly typical Virgo; which eludes to being meticulous and analytical.

It is not uncommon for me to get reactions of "Kesian nya sorang-sorang!(It's sad to see you alone)" or "Tak bosan ke?(Aren't you bored?)" when I tell friends that I'm out alone. The ones that reply with "Tipulah"(You're lying!) when I tell them I actually enjoyed my time alone, I just find to be rude, in all truths.

Such reactions from them perplex me. I find nothing lacking in being by myself. I savour the freedom to do and go as I please. However, the sheer amount of people that cannot, and sometimes will not, understand my stance leads me to believe that I am a minority in such thoughts.

The funniest question to me would definitely be the "Tak bosan ke?(Aren't you bored?)" because that implies that without another human being present I am unable to amuse myself. But I think they ask that question because that is how it is for them. They are unable to enjoy themselves with just themselves as the company. Speaks volumes about your personality, I think.

One of the reasons I like venturing out by myself is that I notice that when I'm alone, I am more aware of my surroundings. I notice the small cafe tucked between a narrow street, the Korean restaurant at the end of an alley and much more. Some of the things that catch my attention, like the chirps of birds or a smile from a random old lady, might not seem like much but I feel like all these little pieces amount to a beautiful bigger picture. I am in awe of what I see around me when I take the time to notice them.

The other reason is mainly to do with shopping. I would say that I am a fast shopper. I walk into a store, I look around and in my head I quickly dismiss all the things that I don't fancy and target the ones that attract me. I survey the item and if I don't like it enough to buy it then I will leave the store and move on to the next one but if I like it, I'll take it and pay straight away. I don't slowly walk around stores, lingering for quite some time on so-so pieces. I usually already have a list of what I want before starting on the shopping trip so I don't waste time wafting about. I've gone shopping with quite a few friends and not many can keep up. We'll end up separated and just arrange a place and time to meet before heading home because I'm usually at least two stores ahead of them. I freaking power walk from store to store.

Anyways, the whole point of this piece is not to advocate being alone forever or anything remotely like that. It is just to show that it is possible for someone to be by themselves and not curl up in a ball of loneliness. I know that everyone is different and some people are just wired a certain way but for those of you that have never tried taking a day to walk about town by yourself and have always seen it as a very sad and depressing thing to do, I advise you to try it. You never know, you might end up liking the company of yourself a little more than you did before and love yourself a little better.

A Day Out in Nagoya

Last week during Golden Week, I met up with a few friends in Nagoya just to meet and catch up. Nagoya is a beautiful old city. Just because it's old doesn't mean it can be vibrant and modern at the same time too. I definitely recommend anyone thinking of travelling to Japan to come here, even for a day. There are a lot of attractions, see Nagoya Info Website. The site has all the information you'd need.

Every time I come here, I'll have dinner at a famous Unagi(eel) restaurant that's located in the mall above Nagoya Station on the 8th floor(or was it the 7th?). It costs around ¥3000 per person. A tad on the expensive side, but seriously so freaking worth it.

Here are some photos I snapped while walking about with my friends.

Kau hingat New York je ada Central Park? Nagoya pun hado ok!

You guys can make a day stop to tour Nagoya as you're on your way to Tokyo from Osaka or vice versa because it's in the middle of those two places.

My Must Have For Spring & Summer

I have trouble getting ready for early morning classes in time so a thrown-on dress like the ones below would be lovely. Haha!

These are a few of the dresses available at G.U Japan. Their clothes are super affordable and comfy. G.U is the less expensive sibling of Uniqlo Japan.

The dresses also come in other different colours but these are the one that I have my eyes on. I'll grab them this weekend, maybe.
A simple, basic black one for more somber days
A cute laced one for flirty moods
When feeling like one colour just isn't enough
For the denim lovers out there.
The denim one might also be great on much cooler days. Spring weather can get pretty chilly sometimes.

Sticking To My Guns

It's hard to stay on course when there are so many mouths, magazines and posts telling me that I should want more. I don't want more, I want just the right amount. Think Parisian Chic not Trailer Trashy.

Everything I want for our big event can be summed up by the photo below :

Luxurious, simple, and understated.

Plum(梅) Blossoms at Mito's Kairakuen(偕楽園)

A temple at the park

I failed to catch the Plum blossoms during my first and second year due mainly to bad timing. Finally get to see them during my third, not to mention last year, at Ibaraki.

The Plum blossoms come in a variety of shades. You can pick up a pamphlet at the entrance which will explain the many different types of Plum blossoms that grow inside the park grounds.

Soft and subtle pink blossoms

A more vibrant shade of pink

No matter how many times I go to this park the view from the top of the stairs always gets to me. It looks so typically Japanese, all tranquil and eye-pleasing.

Later on we had a lunch at a seafood place. To those of you that have never tried eating raw seafood, try doing it in Japan. It will change your life, like, for real.

Sweet and sour Plum ice-cream

This was at a different park

That slight bump you see on the ground in the photo above is actually a grave. Yes, a dead person lies underneath that. Kind of creepy that the graveyard of past rulers have now become a park.

Watanabe

Also at a different park

After we were done at the Kairakuen we went to a different park where they had the above attraction. I'm not sure what it is or what it represents. Looks kind of Aztec-y, don't you think?

Gifu University

I graduated from Ibaraki National College of Technology(茨城高等専門学校) and am now continuing my degree at Gifu University(岐阜大学). It'll take two years, because I'll start in third year, then I might start working or continue on to a Masters. I haven't decided yet.

The program

This was during the Entrance Ceremony. Unlike in Malaysia or many other countries, for that matter, Japan has both an Entrance and a Graduation Ceremony. It doesn't take very long, two hours tops.

There'll be a a few speeches by some big wigs then some well wishes for the coming year and we're done.
